Libre 3 Plus in Australia is Only Weeks Away

Updated: 3 days ago

ree

The Freestyle Libre 3 Plus will be available through the NDSS CGM Subsidy Scheme on 1 December 2025. giving At this stage, the sensor will only be available to people who use the Ypsomed insulin pump with the CamAPS FX algorithm. This will give them another continuous glucose monitoring option alongside the Dexcom G6.

At this stage, Freestyle Libre 3 Plus will not be available as a standalone sensor, and we don't have any information on what other pumps it may pair with in the future.

What’s New with the Libre 3 Plus

The Libre 3 Plus builds on the Libre 2 Plus with several updates:

  • Smaller design: about the size of a $2 coin (21 × 2.9 mm). This will make it the smallest sensor available in Australia.

  • Longer Bluetooth range: up to 10 metres (if unobstructed/line-of-sight).

  • Pre-assembled sensor: comes ready to insert – no need to peel, unscrew and connect two components.

  • Compatibility with mylife YpsoPump and CamAPS FX.

Other features remain consistent with the previous model (Freestyle Libre 2 Plus), including:

  • Glucose readings every one minute.

  • Average lag time of about 2.1 minutes for children and 2.4 minutes for adults, meaning sensor readings stay close to blood glucose levels.

  • 15-day wear time.

  • Approved for ages 2 and up.

  • Free from IBOA and MBPA (two common skin allergens).

How It Fits into the Ypsomed System

When it becomes available, Ypsomed pump users will be able to choose between two CGMs – the Dexcom G6 or Freestyle Libre 3 Plus – for use with CamAPS FX. Both sensors will support closed-loop functionality, so the decision may come down to personal preference, and comfort with different sensor designs.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • The Libre 3 Plus will only be available for Ypsomed pump users at first.

  • Abbott has indicated plans to expand access in the future, but there’s no timeline yet.

  • It is not compatible with other Libre readers or apps, including Libre 2, LibreLink, LibreView, or LibreLinkUp.

Compatibility

The latest version of the CamAPS FX app on both Android and iOS will work with the Libre 3 Plus sensor. iOS 18.5 is confirmed as compatible, while iOS 16 hasn’t been officially verified yet — it may work, but if you prefer to avoid surprises, it’s safest to wait for confirmation.

On Android, version 15 is confirmed as compatible. Some phones have already moved to Android 16, and while these devices still work with the CamAPS app, Libre 3 Plus may experience interference issues until full compatibility is released.

How to Switch Over

If you're using the Ypsomed pump with CamAPS FX now, and would like to transition from Dexcom G6 to the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus, you'll need to get your diabetes educator to update your NDSS details to the new CGM.

If you're an existing patient at the Type 1 Family Centre and you're confident in setting up the Libre 3 yourself, we can change your registration with just an email appointment. If you'd like help starting the new CGM, you can book an appointment fae-to-face and we'll step your through it. Either way, give us a call to get started.

If you're a new patient, reach out by phone and we'll figure out the best way to get you up and running on Libre 3 Plus.

The Takeaway

As the NDSS rollout begins, the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus offers Ypsomed users another CGM option to tailor their loop setup to what works best for them. It won’t be the right fit for everyone, but having more sensor choice is always a win for people with type 1. We’ll continue sharing updates as the technology evolves and as more information becomes available.
