Become a Type 1 Mentor
Are you someone who:

Wants to make a difference but is not sure where to start?
Feels ready to give back to the type 1 community?
Enjoys connecting with others who “get it”?
Is looking for a flexible, meaningful way to volunteer?

Life with type 1 diabetes is complicated enough—especially as a teenager.
Our T1D Empower program connects teens living with type 1 to young adults who’ve been there, understand the challenges, and can help make life with diabetes a little easier to navigate.

What is T1D EmPOWER?

T1D Empower is an 8-to-12 week peer mentoring program that pairs teens (mentees) with adult mentors who live with type 1 diabetes. Each pair connects weekly—by phone or in person—to talk through real-life challenges, share strategies, and build confidence in managing T1D day-to-day.
You don’t need to be perfect at diabetes to take part. You just need empathy, lived experience, and a willingness to show up and listen. We’ll guide you through a short orientation so you feel prepared and supported before you begin.
Why it matters

Teen years can be tough, and diabetes adds a layer of complexity most people don’t understand. By becoming a mentor, you’ll:

Help a teen feel less alone and more capable
Share what’s worked for you (and what hasn’t)
Strengthen your own leadership and communication skills
Connect with other mentors who care about making a difference
What's involved
You will be paired with a teen who shares your interests and meet once a week in a way that suits them. In person, over the phone, or online to chat through short, engaging modules and share real-life experiences.
The time commitment is light (around 10–20 minutes a week), but the impact can be lifelong.

Orientation:
We’ll equip you with everything you need before you start, you're not on your own.

Weekly connection:
Chat with your mentee once a week for 8–12 weeks.

Ongoing support:
You’ll have guidance from our team the whole way through.

Celebration:
At the end, we’ll come together to celebrate what you’ve achieved.
