Supporting Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Who Choose a Lower-Carbohydrate Approach
An increasing number of people with type 1 diabetes are adopting Therapeutic Carbohydrate Reduction (TCR) as part of their management strategy. Evidence suggests that reducing carbohydrate intake can help stabilise blood glucose levels, lower insulin requirements, and improve HbA1c.

Clinical Evidence for TCR
A recent meta-analysis found that for every 50g reduction (per day) in carbohydrate intake, HbA1c improved by 0.52%. Additionally, 100% of individuals consuming ≤50g of carbohydrates per day achieved an HbA1c below 7.0% (Koutnik et al., 2024).

Our very own senior clinician, Amy Rush, was co-author on the very first international guidelines for TCR in Type 1 Diabetes, released in 2024. To learn more about TCR in T1D, you can read the guidelines here.

Implementing TCR with Patients
At the Type 1 Diabetes Family Centre, our dual-qualified diabetes educators and dietitians specialise in supporting patients who choose to incorporate TCR into their diabetes care. Our clinicians take a flexible, patient-centred approach, tailoring carbohydrate intake to individual needs and lifestyles—helping patients achieve better glycemic control without unnecessary restriction.
